The sun shone and the band played on, helping to make Forton’s 2013 Field Day one to remember.
The whole village and many visitors turned out to watch the lunch-time procession led by Darwen Brass. The parade included the new and retiring rose queens plus other local festival “royalty”and fancy dress entrants.
Lucy Physick, the rose queen for 2013, was crowned by retiring queen Eve Taylor on the village playing fields, before the afternoon’s entertainment began.
Traditional games and side shows, such as a coconut shy and 10-pin bowling. as well as modern attractions proved popular.
The afternoon event concluded with culminated with children’s races, an “extremely competitive” mums’ and dads’ race and the traditional tug of war – won once again by the ladies.
An evening barbecue and disco provided a fitting climax to the day. On Sunday the celebrations concluded with a special thanksgiving service at St James, Shireshead, for the rose queen and the village.
