Who’s got the worst hair of Euro 2016?

Turkey defensive midfielder Ozan Tufan could be in a spot of hot water with his manager Fatih Terim after TV footage apparently showed him fixing his hair rather than closing down Luka Modric during the build up to his goal in Turkey’s 1-0 loss to Croatia on Sunday.

Tufan isn’t the only Euro 2016 star who has put the effort into looking his best for the cameras and we’ve seen some weird and wonderful hairstyles making their debuts.

But have they overshadowed their owners’ contributions on the pitch?

Here we rate five players on their hairstyles and their match performances.

Paul Pogba

An early contender for most interesting hairstyle of the tournament was France and Juventus star Paul Pogba. His close-cropped locks featured detailed patterns shaved into the back and sides and an off-centre purple stripe stretching back from his hairline. Actually an improvement on some of his previous barnets.

Pogba came close with a number of efforts against Romania but failed otherwise to influence the match overmuch. We’ll give him a six out of ten rating for his performance in the opening match but ten out of ten for originality in the hair stakes.

Marouane Fellaini

Looking more like Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons than ever, Manchester United star Fellaini’s bleached curls coordinated well with the yellow piping down the sides of the Belgium home top.

Unfortunately his coordination in front of goal was less in evidence against Italy and despite getting in some excellent positions, he failed to find the back of the net. Another six out of ten match rating and a matching rating for the hair.

Gareth Bale

He’s been sporting the ‘man bun’ for some time now, but no discussion of hair at the Euros would be complete without the luscious locks of Wales talisman Bale. Loved and hated in equal measure, the ‘man bun’ style has gained popularity with hipsters, celebs and now footballers. Bale, much like Swedish striker Ibrahimović, is unmistakeable from the stands thanks to his distinctive do.

He was a standout nine out of ten against Slovakia on Saturday and as anyone with long hair knows, it takes a lot of effort to keep it in good condition, so we’ll give him nine out of ten for effort with his follicles.

Aaron Ramsey

Bale’s Welsh team mate Ramsay signed a new deal in 2014 - no, not with Arsenal, with the Elite Modelling agency - so you’d expect him to have his finger on the pulse of fashion. His look for this tournament is more late nineties than it is cutting edge though. He’d fit right in with the 1998 Romanian World Cup squad - who famously all dyed their hair blonde for the tournament - or a crowd at an Eminem concert circa Marshall Mathers LP.

But did the real Aaron Ramsey stand up on the pitch? Thankfully for Welsh fans yes. He set up the winner in the Slovakia clash and had a number of good chances on his own. Eight out of ten on the pitch but a poor five out of ten for the hair.

Radja Nainggolan

Not a player whose name was on the tips of our tongues ahead of the tournament, but if there is a more distinctive-looking head and shoulders at Euro 2016 than Fellaini it’s his team mate Nainggolan. With a bleached-blonde mohawk, swept into a side parting on an otherwise clean shaven scalp above a heavily tattooed neck, the Roma midfielder is player we’d least like to meet in a dark alley as well as the player with the worst hair of Euro 2016.

He was one of Belgium’s best players in the Italy match before being substituted after 60 minutes so we’ll give him a seven out of ten rating for his performance. Unfortunately for Nainggolan we’re only scoring him a four out of ten for his hair.

..Just don’t tell him we said that.
