THE queen of the county's agricultural shows IS moving to Myerscough - with Royal blessing.
Summer 2008 will see the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Show held on Duchy of Lancaster's land, pulling in huge crowds from across the country.
The 2008 show will be a curtain-raiser on much bigger things to come over the next few years at the former
quarry site, where plans for a multi-million pound 'Duke of Lancaster Park' showground and rural business centre are being drawn up.
This week the Duchy also unveiled plans to convert the disused South Planks farm at Myerscough into offices/business space - a move described by the Duchy as "an integral part of the vision and masterplan that we have for the broader redevelopment of this 220-acre site."
News of the developments - two weeks after The Courier exclusively revealed the likely relocation of the Royal Lancs Show and the progress on the Duchy's Duke of Lancaster Park plans - have prompted a mixed reaction.
Clerk to Myerscough and Bilsborrow Parish Council Roy Bassnett said: "I think it is fantastic, wonderful news, that we are to have such a prestigious show here."
But officials of the area's two main local agricultural shows are worried the proximity of the Royal Lancs at Myerscough - close in terms of distance and dates to their own shows - will have an impact.
Garstang Show secretary Sue White said: "It will mean there will be three shows more or less within a few weeks of each other in the same area."
She said the summer shows would all be wanting to attract the same exhibitors, same trade stands and same visitors.
She added: "It is not antagonism against another show but the logistics of the situation if there are a lot of shows around the same time."
Great Eccleston show spokesman Dr John Mackie said: "Staging the county show in our own backyard is bound to have a effect, but the organisers of Great Eccleston Show were not consulted at any point in the decision-making process."
The Duchy's chief officer, Paul Clarke, said: "We are delighted that the RLAS has chosen to move to our proposed new showground at Duke of Lancaster Park.
"We are currently preparing proposals which we believe will enhance the area for generations to come and, as part of that vision, wanted to offer the UK's oldest agricultural society a new home, worthy of its history and reputation."
Responding to local concerns he said: "We do not see the proposed Duke of Lancaster Park as being in direct competition with other local shows.
"As part of our consultation process, we will be making contact with the organisers to discuss ways in which we can work together in due course."
The Duchy is planning consultations over the Duke of Lancaster Park before the end of the year. Its plans will be submitted to Wyre Council in early 2008.
The Royal Lancs has been held at Salesbury, near Ribchester, for the past few years and is due to hold its three-day 2007 show there again from Friday, July 20 to Sunday, July 22.
The decision to move to Myerscough was taken at a meeting of RLAS officials at Samlesbury Village Hall on Thursday.
No-one from the RLAS was available to comment this week.
