Athlete Edward is gold standard
A YOUNG athlete from Garstang has won the U17 400m Hurdles at the Lancashire County Championships.
Edward Greenall completed the event in a time of 58.6 seconds, beating his previous personal best of 62.0.
The 16-year-old, who is a pupil at Ripley St Thomas CE High School, Lancaster, joined the Preston Harriers three years ago, and was due to compete again at the North of England Championships at Wigan at the weekend.
Edward said: "I have always loved watching athletics on TV and I enjoyed taking part in sports day whilst I was in primary school.
"When I moved to high school I got more involved in athletics because I was becoming a quicker runner but I never had any intention on joining a club until a friend from school suggested to me that I should go down to Preston Harriers. I was the district 400m champion at the time and they thought I would benefit from training at a club."
Edward decided to take athletics more seriously in the summer of 2007 when he travelled to Brimingham to watch the English Schools Championships, and was inspired by the young athletes who took part.
He now trains between two and four times a week depending on the time of year, and competes most weekends during the summer. His training includes track, circuit training, weight training and endurance, and he has also attended the Hurdles Academy at Stoke-on-Trent.
He said: "My hopes for the near future are to firstly qualify and be selected for the English Schools Championships, reach the final of the 400m Hurdles and hopefully challenge for a medal.
"I would also like to become the North of England Champion, as I would then be Lancashire County and North of England Champion. This would be a great achievement for me as I have had to change a lot in the past year and I have put my heart and soul into training. To become North of England Champion at my event would make me very happy and all the training will have paid off."
Edward would eventually like to become a professional athlete. His dream is to race the best athletes in the world and compete to become world champion, or even Olympic champion.
He added: "I enjoy the atmosphere of athletics because it is unlike any other sport. All the people are friendly and there is never any trouble and I also enjoy the competition because it is always very tense, especially at the bigger competitions.
"I also enjoy it because you are an individual in athletics and you compete for yourself even though you are also representing your club. I love the feeling you get when you win a race and you know that you won because of all the hard work you have put in."
Edward's mum Sadie added: "My husband and I fully support Edward in helping him to realise his dream. We are very proud of our son, and although he knows he has chosen a profession in which very few reach the top, it does not deter him."
