TWO local colleges are set to host Olympic athletes in the build up to the 2012 London Games.
Both Stonyhurst and Myerscough College have been selected as a part of the pre-Olympic training camps, with Stonyhurst to be used for hockey, and Myerscough the equestrian events.
Stonyhurst's Admissions and Marketing manager Jonathan Hewet, said: "It is a feather in the cap for Stonyhurst to be chosen as one of the North West's Olympic training camps. Perhaps some of our girls will return here to train as members of the Great Britain hockey squad!"
Stonyhurst boasts a state-of-the-art all-weather floodlit aqua turf pitch, which unlike normal sand-based all-weather surfaces, is water-based, which cushions falls better. The pitch, installed in 2001, is also large enough to host two hockey matches simultaneously.
Myerscough's International Arena, opened in 2003, is considered one of the top equestrian venues in the country, with two arenas and a seating gallery which can accommodate 400 spectators. The college also has two outdoor arenas.
As well as the standard of training facilities, potential camps were assessed on accommodation, ability to offer appropriate catering, good transport links, sports science facilities and access to a good hospital.
The two colleges are amongst over 600 facilities to be named in the London Committee's Pre-Games Training Camp Guide, which was launched by Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, MP Andy Burnham. The guide will now be circulated worldwide to all National Olympic Committees and National Paralympic Committees, who will then decide where to send their athletes.
Despite being included in the guide, both Stonyhurst and Myerscough are not certain to be chosen to host any of the Olympians. Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell, warned: ''There are no guarantees of success just by making it into the guide. There will be fierce competition to host foreign teams and individuals, and now it is for every nation and region, every venue, to sell itself internationally.''
Myerscough will be competing with 59 other equestrian locations across Great Britain, including the likes of Aintree Racecourse and Cheltenham Racecourse. With only 20 nations expected to compete in the various equestrian events, many venues look set to miss out on the opportunity.
Stonyhurst, one of only three locations to be chosen for hockey in the North West, faces competition from 37 other camps around Great Britain including Loughborough University and Belle View Regional Hockey Centre. But with only 24 hockey teams - a mix of both men and women's - expected to compete in 2012, there is likely to be serious competition leading up to the Games.
