GARSTANG Rugby Club's first XV ended a promising first season in North Lancs One with a disappointing defeat to Trafford MV.
The team were shorn of some of their strongest players through unavailability and injury and this told in the latter stages of the game as a very tidy Trafford team exploited the weaknesses.
With a clash of home fixtures with the Blues the 1st XV
made the very generous gesture of playing their game away from Hudson Park. Instead of travelling to Trafford they compromised and played the game at Preston Grasshoppers.
The team have suffered many, many narrow defeats this season and they have only suffered a couple of big defeats.
However, with very little to play for on the last day they slumped to their biggest loss of the season.
Ed O'Riordan has been a loyal and willing replacement for the 1sts this season and he was rewarded with a first start for the team, albeit in the unfamiliar role of scrum half.
The team played well in the first half and were extremely competitive. However, lapses of concentration allowed Trafford to score two tries and take a 14-0 lead into the break.
The second half was a different affair as Trafford started to impose their dominance and they were able to score four further tries. This made the final score 38-0 which was a disappointing end to the season but ultimately there was no harm done.
The game was the final time that Jimmy Richardson will lead the First XV. He is stepping down after one season in the job due to work commitments and to allow him to concentrate on just playing rugby. Jimmy has been fantastically committed to the job this season and can be proud of his work in keeping Garstang in North Lancs One.
Team: Chris Bone, Justin, Jon Corless, Stuart Rigby, Matt Lennie, Jimmy Richardson, Keith Yates, Ed O'Riordan, Andy Blackley, Adam Nickson, Simon Knox, Andy Emmott, John Robinson, Paul Shepherd. Replacements: Gareth Pullen, Joe Taylor.
On Friday April 25 Garstang have their AGM when, amongst other things, the club will be voting on a new 1st XV Captain for the 2008/09 season. The meeting starts at 19:00 at Garstang Sports and Social Club and all club members are encouraged to attend.
