Huge turnout for 10k and fun run
GARSTANG High School's annual 10K run and fun run ran like clockwork on Sunday according to organisers.
Athletes came from far and wide to take part, and over 500 people ran on the day to raise money for extra equipment for pupils.
Ewen Malloch, of Woodford Green, won the race with a time of 32.04 minutes. He was quickly followed by Steve Littler of Wesham RR, who finished in 32.41 minutes.
Matt Moorhouse, of Salford Harriers, finished in third place with a time of 33.27 minutes.
In fourth and fifth places were Scott Monk, of Blackburn Harriers, and Russell Maddams, of Horwich RMI, who finished in 33.32 and 33.45 minutes respectively.
The first local man past the finish line was Graham Tagg, a member of Garstang Running Club, who finished in 26th place with a time of 38.02 minutes.
The first woman home was Maria Lowe, of the Salford Harriers, who finished in 36.11 minutes, earning her 16th place.
The fun run was also a great success, with 113 adults and youngsters taking part.
14-year-old Joe Cobb won the race, finishing in 11.46 minutes. He was followed by 13-year-old Sam Storey, of Barrow and Furness, who finished in 11.49 minutes.
And 8-year-old Richard Lawson came in third place with a time of 12.50 minutes.
In fourth place came Ellis Jolly, 10, of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, and Lauren O'Malley, 12, of Leigh Harriers, finished in fifth place.
Organiser Dianne Clarke said the event "couldn't have gone better", and thanked local race organisers for their help and support.
Dianne ran the event with her husband, David, for 16 years before he tragically died in a fall at his home in March 2007, and this year's event was the first she had organised without him.
She said: "Rain was forecast for the weekend, but in the end it stayed dry, and I like to think that David had a nice big umbrella over Garstang High School on Sunday. I think he would have been proud."
