WHEN Katy Parker was 12, she became the youngest ever player picked to represent England in a world championship.
She competed in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and has played in a host of countries across the world including China, Japan and Malaysia.
Over the last couple of weeks (and until August 19), Katy, now 23, has been sharing her table tennis expertise with School Holiday Club goers in Garstang.
Katy - who has recently worked in the promotions department at the Garstang Courier and Longridge News - has been appointed as the North West Regional Coach, as well as coaching the England Junior Squad, and is training with local children aged eight to 14 years through a series of coaching sessions at Garstang YMCA Leisure Centre, organised by Fylde Coast YMCA staff in partnership with Wyre Borough Council.
She said: "Coaching the youngsters at the Holiday Club has been a complete eye opener. When you are as involved in the sport as I am, you forget that some of the children have never even been exposed to table tennis before.
"It is so encouraging when you see the children at the holiday club trying it out for the first time and already beginning to show promising signs of a real talent for the sport."
Rose Beaumont, General Manager at Garstang YMCA Leisure Centre, said: "We were so pleased when Katy agreed to provide coaching sessions for us. We are always looking to give the children something different to the usual holiday club activities and with the Olympics being this summer, we feel very lucky to have been able to give the children a taste of the world class talent they will hopefully not only watch on TV, but also aspire to."
Coun Lynne Bowen, Living Healthily Portfolio Holder for Wyre Borough Council, added: "Offering youngsters new and exciting alternatives to more traditional team sports goes a long way towards making physical activity more appealing.
"Bringing in top-level coaches like Katy to act as role models and show what can be achieved makes the experience even more inspiring."
As the North West Regional Coach, Katy is assigned to three clubs in the area - Garstang, Blackpool and Morecambe and Lancaster.
Garstang Table Tennis Club will be holding their competition matches and league games at Garstang YMCA Leisure Centre from September 2008 to March 2009.
