AN inaugural kick-boxing tournament in memory of tragic Garstang teenager Jeffrey Harrison has been hailed a great success.
The event was organised by Garstang Martial Arts Club to remember Jeffrey, of Lime Grove, who died in a car accident in August last year aged 17.
A keen amateur boxer and kick boxer, Jeffrey would have turned 18 last month and his friends at the Martial Arts Club arranged the tournament to coincide with that date - and now hope it will become an annual competition.
Trophies
Trophies were awarded to the tournament winners at a memorial party organised by Jeffrey's family to celebrate his 18th and the top prize of the night, the Jeffrey Harrison Memorial Trophy, given to the fighter that displayed the best all round sportsmanship, temperament, control and fighting spirit, went to Kevin Sharples, and was presented to him by Jeffrey's parents, Doreen Harrison and Richard Bell.
The tournament started with the children's competition, in which Alex Murphy came out in first place, with Zac Gilbert runner-up and Luke Guerin third.
In the adult category, after several exhausting two minute continental rounds, first place went to David Oliver, with Jeffrey's father Richard Bell second, Sam Carr in third and John Thompson fourth.
Garstang Kick-Boxing Club was created in Jeffrey's memory, with the intention of creating a club for the local area.
Respect
A club spokesman said: "In memory of Jeffrey we hope to encourage the ideals of respect for themselves and others in the young people.
"We hope the tournament will become an annual event open only to GMA Kickboxing members.''
Anyone wanting to find out more about kick-boxing at the club should call 07787 372210 or e-mail: fujowpai.uk@virgin.net
The club meets at Myerscough College on Monday nights from 6pm to 7.30pm and Garstang Leisure Centre 11am to 12.30pm on Sundays.
