A BLEASDALE athlete who is taking part in the 'On Camp with Kelly' initiative being run by Olympic star Dame Kelly Holmes received a visit from her mentor while training in Portugal.
Preston Harrier club member Steph Roe was in Vilamoura with coach Andy Bibby and other members of her training group and Dame Kelly took the opportunity to spend time with them and the other 12 OCWK athletes training in the area.
She was able to talk to the athletes about their training and the upcoming season and pass on her advice and expertise. 'On Camp with Kelly', supported by Aviva, has also funded a massage therapist to travel to Vilamoura to treat the OCWK athletes.
Dame Kelly said: "A warm weather training trip is an important part of any athlete's preparation for the summer season. Not only do the athletes benefit from the warm climate but they are also able to focus totally on their training away from the distractions of home. It was very important for me to be able to spend time with Steph in Portugal and catch up on her progress."
Steph, a former Garstang High School pupil, said: "It was very motivational to have Kelly come to Portugal to watch us train and spend time with us discussing the importance of making sure you eat the right amount of food so you have enough energy to train and to help prevent injury."
'On Camp with Kelly' is double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes' mentoring initiative for talented young middle distance athletes.
Recent research has shown that 'On Camp with Kelly' has had a significant impact on retaining female athletes in the sport in the late teenage years when drop out rates are traditionally high and has also led to improved performances in female middle distance running.
19-year-old Steph was hand-picked by Dame Kelly to join the 'On Camp with Kelly' initiative in 2007 after impressive results on the track.
As a schoolgirl she finished third in the 800m final at the English Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham in 2005 and last year set a new personal best time for the 400m of 58.1 seconds.
Steph, whose family live at Higher Brock Mill Farm, Bleasdale, began her athletics career in school competitions eight years ago.
She has previously won the 800m in the Wyre Schools and Lancashire County Championships and also scooped the 300m gold in the same competition.
