Westmorland Cricket League – Division 1

Shireshead & Forton......... 196/5

Ambleside..........................146/8

Having been asked to bat first, Shireshead lost Peter Wilson early to B Wileman (1 for 29) before gradually building a strong foundation for their innings. Phil Bovis (77) played his most assured innings to date as he and Paul Yates (76) added 123 for the second wicket. Bovis was patient throughout his innings but quick to seize on anything loose as he struck 15 fours and a six in his knock, whilst Yates accelerated after Bovis’ demise with a succession of boundaries. Simon Gould’s late flurry, including a couple of large sixes, ensured a total of 196 for 5 was posted although D Southworth (2 for 24) emerged with credit for two good spells of bowling.

The Ambleside reply began hesitantly as Danny Wilkinson (3 for 17) had all of the top three back in the pavilion inside the first 8 overs with only 24 on the board, one courtesy of a super Dave Jack catch. At this point Ambleside dug in as G Wedell (52) and R Hunt (45) accumulated a partnership of 106 to throw the game right back in to the balance. Shireshead chopped and changed their bowlers and field settings to no avail until the returning Dave Jack (3 for 31) took a sharp caught and bowled chance to end Weddell’s excellent 99 ball resistance. When Peter Wilson (2 for 27) then accounted for Hunt in the next over, Shireshead had a further 7 overs to snag the last 5 wickets. As the pressure cranked up wickets fell regularly, and the 8th wicket fell with 10 balls still remaining, however A Wood and Southworth ensured the late victory charge was stalled and Shireshead had to settle for a 9 point winning draw.
