THE North West’s biggest motor sport event of the year takes place this weekend – and two brothers from Garstang are aiming for a top result as they contest the Legend Fires North West Stages Rally.

Andrew and John Gardner are competing in the Blackpool-based event for a second successive year, having finished 31st overall in 2011, in only their second event after being away from the sport for 20 years.

Now, with a little more experience under their belts, they hope to better that result in their Subaru Impreza, prepared by Cotton Competition, the Brock-based rally specialists.

This year’s rally promises be the closest battle in its 15-year history.

Four previous winners, Kevin Procter, Darren Doherty, Tony Bardy and John Stone have entered, but they face stiff competition from North West newcomer Paul Bird in his Ford Focus WRC.

Saturday morning’s action centres on Fleetwood Waterfront, where the stage will be run in the opposite direction to that used in previous years.

Four stages are scheduled here, with the first one
