Garstang’s hopes of securing a promotion place were put on hold by a Lytham side which made a mockery of their lowly league position.

Lytham looked the sharper from the off, Brindle having to palm an Ainsworth free-kick that bounced in front of him over the bar after only 12 minutes. Then the same player tested Brindle again only minutes later with a good strike from distance.

The nearest Garstang came to an early goal was when Jack robbed his man on the right and whipped in a vicious cross that Poole just could not connect with.

An under-pressure Glennie took a booking in the 30th minute prior to a decent spell for the home team in which McGuigen did well to smuggle away an Anderson shot that come back to him off Poole.

Matters became more difficult for the home team in the 40th minute when Glennie inexcusably pulled his man back after being caught in possession to earn himself a second yellow card and hence a sending off.

Garstang’s usual spirit just was not there. Jack who could be exempt from such criticism was booked for a block on Barber before the players trudged off for their half-time team talk.

Whatever plans had been drawn up at the break were reduced to shreds in the 55th minute when Cooke cut inside and drilled a shot past Brindle.

Swindlehurst came on for Draycott after 60 minutes but it just was not happening for Garstang as Warburton and Waite in the heart of the Lytham defence swallowed up everything, maintaining a tight grip on the game. Garstang did have another opportunity in the 68th minute when Poole headed an Anderson free-kick wide, but that was it as far as real chances were concerned.

Thompson for Lytham and Gierke for Garstang picked up yellow cards in a disappointing game for a decent crowd.

The game was sponsored by Singleton’s of Garstang.David Jack was chosen as man of the match and the award was presented by committee member Dick Gudgeon.
