Coar double in Green victory

West Lancashire League Division 1

Mill Hill St Peters 1

Hurst Green 3

Hurst Green made the short trip across Blackburn to play Mill Hill St Peters. With a virtually full strength squad, manager Seedall was optimistic after the fantastic win of the previous week.

Alex Gunn made his second start of the season in goal, replacing the London-bound Adam Chester.

The game started quietly. Both teams approached with a degree of caution, each attempting to win the midfield battle. Neither side seemed prepared to give an inch, and the longer the half went on, the harder the tackles became. Byrne found himself on the receiving end of the referee’s wrath after a solid tackle was judged unfair.

Hurst Green seemed the more likely to open the day’s scoring, but the final ball was lacking. Brierley’s long throw-ins were causing the home defence problems, without the visitors being able to capitalise.

However, with virtually the last kick of the half, Coar controlled a defence-splitting pass from Scott and despatched the ball into the top right of the goal.

With the wind in their sails, Green started the second half as they left off. Within five minutes of the restart, Coar had doubled his tally when he received the ball from a throw in at the edge of the box, turned and unleashed an unstoppable shot.

Whilst Hurst Green were on top, Seedall clamoured for the third goal that would but the game beyond the host’s reach. There were a number of close opportunities, Walker, Coar and substitute Mort all going close.

On 65 minutes, the goal came. Mort ghosted into the box, and latched on to a Reynolds free kick, clipping the ball home.

With 15 minutes to go, Mill Hill pulled a goal back out of nowhere. A speculative shot, with the suspicion of a deflection, bounced inches past the despairing dive of Gunn.

However, Green remained composed, and were able to see out the remaining moments of the match without further incident.

Seedall will be looking to make it three out of three against Millom at Smithy Row on Saturday.

Hurst Green: Gunn, Brierley, Enefer, Bartlett, Aspinwall, Scott, Byrne, Reynolds, Walker, McLean, Coar. Subs: Mort, Cookson, Welch, Howarth.
