Garstang 4

Tempest Utd 1

Garstang returned to West Lancs Premier League action with a comfortable victory over Tempest, but it was not, as the score may suggest ,all one way traffic.

Fielding three new players in the starting line up – defenders Bell and Baker with Dodd in midfield – it took time for the home team to settle.

The first chance fell to Tempest after only seven minutes. Brindle made a good save only for the ball to drop to Hyde, who blasted over from close range.

Garstang’s first opportunity came two minutes later when Poole rounded the keeper, but stumbled and the chance went.

Gemmell went close for the visitors when he was given time to shoot, but it was the Riversiders who seized the initiative on 14 minutes.

Fawcett back heeled to Gierke and he cleverly chipped the ball across to the unmarked Poole, who headed in from close range.

It was 2 -0 after 24 minutes when Fawcett made a strong run across the edge of the visitors’ box before shooting. The strike was palmed out by Tebay to Dodd, who made no mistake from close range.

The Garstang defence, marshalled by new man Baker, had reduced Tempest to long range efforts, and with Bell and Anderson providing extra attacking options down the flanks the home team controlled the remainder of the first half.

The game was all but over after 47 minutes when the unselfish Poole laid the ball back to man of the match Gaz Fawcett, who lashed the ball home from 15 yards.

Three minutes later it was job done. From his own half, Dodd put through Fawcett through and his strong run and shot hit the post rolled across the line for goal poacher Poole to apply the final touch.

Garstang had switched off when Hyde pulled one back for the visitors a minute later to give Tempest a glimmer of hope. All three Tempest substitutes were introduced before manager Swan sent on Draycott to replace Helliwell in the 63rd minute for Garstang.

Tempest substitute Booth headed wide a Carter cross as they tried valiantly to make up the deficit.

Another new signing, Danboyi, replaced Bell on 77 minutes before Draycott was yellow carded for a late challenge on Carter.

Panepinto came on in place of Poole for the last 10 minutes and should have scored when he headed a good cross from Dodd wide of the upright.

Whilst manager Swan was obviously pleased with the result he thought that his team could play better and was less than pleased with the goal conceded.

The game was sponsored by Geoff Hargreaves, who chose Gaz Fawcett as man of the match.
