West Lancashire League Division One
Garstang FC 5
Garstang have stepped up their promotion chances after an emphatic victory over league strugglers Stoneclough.
The Riversiders moved to second place in Division one after a 5-1 goal thriller away from home, which saw Tom Graham earn a brace on his debut for Ian Swan’s side.
The result however, didn’t tell the full story. The first 15 minutes saw Brindle save a Mcloughlin penalty, tip a good strike by Dean over the bar then go full length to cut out a dangerous cross by Derbyshire.
It wasn’t until the 28th minute Garstang seriously threatened the Stoneclough goal, when Makin swept the ball out to Anderson on the right, his shot come cross was tipped away for a corner.
Minutes later Poole hit the bar then again the same player had another opportunity that sailed over the bar.
Fawcett was the inspiration for the opening goal in the 43rd minute. A trade mark run deep into the Stoneclough half, a pull back for Squirrell, his shot coming back off the post for Poole in the right place to tap in, half time, 0 – 1.
The second half in the main belonged to Garstang. Young Stoneclough keeper, Dundarton made two good saves from Makin, one a free kick, before Garstang increased their lead when Draycott waltzed his away down the line before making it 0 – 2 from an acute angle.
A great run and shot by captain Fawcett brought an equally great save out of Dunbarton before Poole made it three heading home a perfect cross by Anderson on 58 minutes. Mcloughlin pulled one back for the hosts before Poole was given another opportunity heading an Ireland cross on to the bar.
With 12 minutes to go Manager Swan sent on 17- year- old Tom Graham for Poole who had been suffering from chest pains and it wasn’t long before the youngster had made an impact when he exchanged passes with Anderson before coolly picking his spot shooting past the outstretched arms of the home keeper.
To crown a memorable first team debut Graham showed why he was the leading scorer in the Youth League last season when he was on hand to guide home the fifth goal following another good run and shot by the hard working Fawcett.
Whilst Graham almost stole the show with his two goals in 12 minutes a number of players made significant contributions, Fawcett, Poole, Benson, Makin, Anderson, Brindle and Draycott would all have earned high merit marks for their performances. Garstang will look to press on in their next fixture away at Haslingden St Marys
