Two wonder goals in the 50th and 56th minutes by Draycott and Poole sealed a magnificent win for Garstang against top of the table Norcross & Warbreck.

Garstang’s task had become considerably more difficult when influential midfielder Paul Osbourne limped off after only 5 minutes to be replaced by David Jack.

Rick Seeare let Garstang off the hook after only 12 minutes when he rolled his shot against the post with an open goal in front of him but it wasn’t long before the visitors took the lead Morris finishing well from a Pett pass.

Norcross were bossing proceedings at this stage, Curwen who was in goal for the unavailable Brindle went full length to keep out a Morris free kick and it wasn’t until the 35th minute that Garstang had their first real effort on goal when Draycott’s strike was deflected away to safety.

The defining moment in the game came in the 38th minute when Pugh received a straight red for stamping on Fawcett.

Much to the credit of Manager Swan, the Garstang formation was altered at half time to take advantage of the extra man, Squirrell joining Poole and Gierke “up top”. It wasn’t long into the second half when Draycott struck a wonderful shot from 35 yards that looped under the crossbar to make it 1 – 1. Garstang began to exert pressure on the Norcross goal, a good cross by the hard working Anderson to the near post saw Poole just fail to turn the ball into the net.

The second goal of real quality came in the 56th minute, Draycott won the ball in the middle of the Norcross half, fed the ball to Poole who with defenders round him flicked the ball over one (Gascoigne style) and smashed the ball past Gorham in the Norcross goal.

A minute later Poole contributed significantly in Gierke’s goal that made it 3 – 1 putting Garstang in firm control of the game.

Norcross fought hard to get back in the game and but some resolute defending by Crossley and Benson in particular and hard work by Fawcett and Anderson to keep the visitors at bay, victory was in sight but there were more nervy moments when substitute Seeare pulled another goal back for Norcross.

Garstang however, finished on a high Squirrell bringing a good save out of Gorham then heading an Anderson corner inches over the bar in the closing minutes.

Bookings for Crossley and Jack did nothing to detract from a fine win against a good Norcross team and with teams in contention for promotion dropping points it was a great day for the “Riversiders”
