Fleetwood Hesketh 2
West Lancs Premier League
Garstang’s run of poor home results continued on a wild and wintry Saturday afternoon down at the Riverside and, furthermore, the damage had all been done by the 23rd minute.
Curwen had replaced the unavailable Brindle in goal, while Crossley, Dodd and new signing Ollett took up places on the bench.
It was debateable whether the opening goal on five minutes went directly in from the corner or off the head of Brooks at the back post.
Either way it was a big blow for the Riversiders and when Hoy slipped Gierke on the edge of the box before stroking the ball into the top corner of the net it looked all over for Garstang.
But to their credit the players didn’t let their heads drop.
Taylor engineered an excellent cross into the visitors’ danger area only for Gierke to be pulled up for his challenge on the keeper.
Garstang made a positive start to the second half, Helliwell set Poole on his way to goal only to be forced wide by the oncoming keeper, the striker put the ball into the path of Anderson who was brought crashing to the ground for a penalty.
The expected breakthrough didn’t come when Gierke’s penalty stuck the post before going to safety.
Minutes later Fawcett provided Gierke with another chance but it wasn’t his day and he pulled the shot wide. Dodd and Ollett replaced Melling and Jack in the 67th minute.
Garstang were having the majority of the play, Taylor put Poole through but he couldn’t keep his shot down.
Curwen was brought into action saving from a Hill header then Ritchie was booked for a professional foul on Poole but try as they did the elusive goal would not come.
Fleetwood Hesketh did all they could to preserve their two-goal lead resulting in Craig’s dismissal with five minutes to go when he brought down the hard working Poole who only had keeper Wilkinson to beat.
Before the final whistle Brooks was booked for Fleetwood Hesketh and Taylor who had worked hard for his Garstang team.
Although this was a bad result for Garstang it hadn’t been a bad performance leaving them to dust themselves down and pick themselves up for Saturday’s visit to newly appointed Tony Hesketh’s Fulwood Amateurs.
The game was sponsored by Geoff Hargreaves who chose Gaz Fawcett as the man of the match.
