Wyre Villa 1
(West Lancs division one)
Keeper Jim Brindle was the hero as Garstang hung on to grab all three points in this pulsating local derby.
Manager Iain Swan went for a 3-5-2 formation which proved to be a master stroke with both Anderson and Stone fulfilling their roles perfectly in the unaccustomed wing back positions.
Garstang made the brighter start, Anderson twice getting dangerous crosses into the box in the first 15 minutes. A long clearance from Brindle almost caught the Wyre defence cold when Poole raced through only to poke the ball wide amidst claims for a penalty as the keeper clipped him.
Wilkinson replaced the injured Banks for Wyre on 27 minutes. There was much tension with tackles flying in from both sides and with a crowd of around 200, the atmosphere was tense.
Wyre gradually eased their way back into the game and had it not been for a brilliant save by Brindle, tipping a Wurledge header over the bar, then Garstang would havegone a goal down.
Fawcett tested home keeper Brown with a long distant effort, then Parry spurned two chances lifting one over the bar and fizzing one narrowly wide.
Micky Evans gave the hosts the lead on the stroke of half time when the dependable Garstang defence appeared to freeze. Garstang were back on level terms after 52 minutes when Draycott cut in from the right and unleashed a screamer with his favoured left, giving Brown no chance.
Evans brought another great save out of Brindle before the ever lively Poole squeezed the ball over the arms of the oncoming Brown, in the 60th minute.
Further chances fell to Draycott and Poole to put the game out of Wyre’s reach but in the end Garstang had to be grateful to Brindle for two more fine saves as the game drew to a close. The sending off of Anderson in the final minute for a second yellow didn’t deter from jubilant scenes at the end of a game that was a credit to both sides.
