Garstang Reserves 6 Tempest United 1

With both Crook and Hay on first team duty and both Ireland and Southward being unavailable, a reshuffle was needed.

Manager Paul Bailey was able to call upon the services of Panepinto and the team were also delighted to welcome back Assistant Manager Curwen to the dugout.

Garstang almost scored immediately from the kick off when Shepherd played a superb through ball to Panepinto who should have done better and shot straight at the keeper. However, in the seventh minute the Tempest keeper cleared straight to Panepinto who from 30 yards out and to the right of the goal, calmly hit a superb side foot chip over the keeper and into the top corner of the net.

1-0 to Garstang with the excellent Roberts,Murphy and Swindlehurst contesting every ball in midfield and always looking to counter at speed.

Soon the lead was doubled following a corner from Panepinto who calmly slotted home from six yards. Tempest tried to raise their game and went close with a shot that flew over Curwen’s goal. Panepinto had a cross shot well saved, Roberts had a goal disallowed for offside.

In the 44th minute Garstang were able to deliver a killer blow which would end the match as a contest when Swindlehurst whipped in a powerful corner and this was met by central defender Joe Miller who deftly flicked the ball into the Tempest goal with a great piece of skill.

As the half came to an end, Garstang were awarded a free kick from 30 yards out and Jack hit a fantastic trademark dipping shot that cannoned off the post and into the air, Panepinto was first to react when he buried the header from eight yards out into the corner of the Tempest net.

Half time came and Garstang were leading 4-0 but this was a much closer game than the score line indicated.

Murphy almost extended the Garstang lead when he cut in from the left wing and after beating two players fired a superb 25 yards shot which whistled past the Tempest goal. Roberts was denied another goal after being caught offside following good work by Swindlehurst and Matichechia.

Tempest countered and pulled a goal back in the 70th minute when Gareth Roberts shot home from 12 yards. Garstang soon re focused and restored the four goal advantage in the 72nd minute when following a great run and cross by Swindlehurst, Panepinto from the left side of the box crashed in an unstoppable shot to take his tally for the game to four.

There was still time for one of Jack’s excellent free kicks to be whipped in to the box and to be met perfectly by substitute Assalone who made no mistake with his header to make the score 6-1 to Garstang.

At this point Tempest started to lose some discipline and had a number of players yellow carded and a player sent off following a second yellow card. Full time and the final result was Garstang 6 Tempest 1

Garstang have seven games left and remain nine points clear of their nearest challengers and also boast the best defence and goal difference within the division.
