West Lancs Reserve League Division 1
Fulwood Amateur Res 3 Garstang Res 2
First teamers Baker and Fawcett along with youth team players Turner and Assalone were all included in the Garstang starting line-up.
The two youngsters combined brilliantly as early as the seventh minute when Turner applied a class finish to a superb Assalone cross but this wasn’t Garstang’s first chance, Graham had rounded the home keeper but an acute angle prevented him from finding the back of the net.
The young Garstang players, Turner, Assalone, Swindlehurst and Graham were proving too lively for a Fulwood side who were finding it difficult to get out of their own half.
Pressure continued on the home goal when Fawcett received the ball from a Swindlehurst corner before cutting inside only to see his shot fly narrowly wide, then Graham was put through on goal but the approaching Fulwood keeper did enough to prevent a second goal.
The only surprise as the half time whistle went was that Garstang were only one goal to the good.
There was an early warning that things weren’t going to be the same in the second half when Byrnes should have done better than shoot straight at Curwen.
Swindlehurst had a strong run and shot but it was Fulwood who had started to boss the game. The injured Ireland was replaced by Andy Taylor in the 60th minute.
Fulwood’s Fox had an opportunity to equalise but could only hit the side netting. Then Hull waltzed past Fawcett on the right but his shot was deflected for a corner.
More pressure ensued on the Garstang goal until a long clearance by Curwen found the head of Graham putting the ball into the path of Assalone. His great strike brought an excellent save from Grant in the home goal.
The game was turned on its head on 72 minutes by Fox who seized on some indifferent defending to make it 1–1, then within a minute Fox had put his team in front when the ball had come back off the bar following another super cross by Hull.
Garstang dug deep and levelled four minutes later, Graham had made a good run, his shot struck the post and came out to Taylor who slotted home.
Sutcliffe and Southward came on for Turner and Assalone who had both given good account of themselves.
With only 10 minutes to go Fulwood secured all three points when substitute Mcdonald struck a fine shot to produce a final score line that at one stage looked highly unlikely.
