Garstang Youth 1
Thornton Cleveleys 2
Garstang’s last home game of the season ended in a narrow defeat and another trip to A&E for one their injured players.
Once again many players were unavailable with injuries but it was good to see J Jones back after glandular fever. Assistant manager Alex Spence was in charge with Chris Nix away. Thornton came to the Globe on a nine-match unbeaten run and full of confidence.
The early stages were dominated by Thornton and it was no surprise when a ball crossed from the right found the Thornton left back unmarked and he volleyed home.
As the half wore on, Garstang came back into the game led by an impressive A Swale in midfield.
On 30 minutes, R Mower beat the keeper to a through ball, knocked it past him and was brought down. Luckily for the keeper it was just outside the box and he received a yellow card.
Only five minutes later the identical situation happened, this time J Jones brought a Thornton forward down on the edge of the box and he received a yellow.
Garstang levelled on 35 minutes when A Swale dribbled past two players and played an inch perfect pass to R Mower who calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner.
The second half was fairly even with Thornton carrying a slightly greater threat going forward but both defences restricting their opponents to long range shots.
M Andrews replaced I Makinson on 60 minutes. Alex Swaile tried to create more going forward.
On 70 minutes, once again Garstang’s luck was out. A Thornton long range shot glanced off A Dallas and wrong footed J Jones and ended up in the corner of the Garstang net. Try as they might Garstang couldn’t find an equaliser and to make matters worse minutes before the final whistle A Dallas clashed heads with a Thornton player. He needed several stitches.
The final whistle blew shortly after. This typified Garstang’s season blighted by illness, injury and conceding late goals.
