Garstang 3

Hawcoat Park 1

A superb Matty Poole hat-trick eased Garstang through to the second round of the President’s Cup in what was the first home first team game since the August.

Manager Iain Swan sprang a surprise team selection by including the newly returned Dave Glennie in a back three. David Jack and Kelvin Bardsley were also included in the starting line up.

Garstang were soon in front when Poole seized on to a poor goal kick by the visitors keeper, Bench. The Garstang striker was quick to react, made towards goal before firing home with only four minutes on the clock.

It was Garstang who were asking all the questions Gierke going close twice in the first 15 minutes.

Evidence that the game was not going to be a formality was to follow when Crossley took a booking for a late challenge then Glennie was dismissed after kicking out at Hawcoat’s Melia who was yellow carded for his reckless tackle in the same incident.

Although down to ten men with over an hour to play Garstang continued to dominate. The classy Anderson fed the ball into the box from a wide position, the ball was headed away, Bardsley’s determination headed the ball back into the danger zone for Poole hook the ball over the keepers head, 2 – 0. Just before the break Jack and Fawcett combined well to provide an opportunity for Anderson but the midfielders shot came back out off the keeper’s legs.

The unfortunate Bardsley limped out of the game to be replaced by Mattichechia after only 53 minutes.

A combination of Hawcoat upping their game and Garstang sitting on their lead brought problems on the hosts.

Round brought a good save out of Brindle. The Manager’s response was to send on Benson and Draycott for Squirrell and Gierke, in the 64th minute.

Hawcoat were right back in the game when some poor defending allowed Jackson to pull one back with a good strike. The same Hawcoat player then headed a corner over the bar then Benson did well to head away a dangerous cross as Garstang’s lead looked less than secure.

The Hawcoat keeper was perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch when he came out of his area to bring down Poole who was bearing down on him.

With only 2 minutes to go Poole made the game safe when he scored his third goal from an acute angle to take his side through to the second round and earn himself the Man of the Match Trophy in the club after the game.

The game was sponsored by Foulds Metals.
