President’s Cup, second round
Furness Rovers 2
Manager Iain Swan and his team were presented with the West Lancashire League team of the month award for February before the game – but that was as good as it got.
The manager rested normal first team choices Fawcett, Poole and Gierke and Osbourne was cup tied.
Anderson returned after suspension, with Makin, Stone and Benson all also making the starting line up.
Despite spending the first 35 minutes almost entirely in the Furness half, Garstang had nothing to show for it. And it was the opposition who ended up having the best chance of the half when McCracken’s header came back off the crossbar following a superb cross by How.
Shields replaced Wood for Furness at the beginning of the second half and they were soon in front when a neat ball inside Garstang full -back Squirrell was latched on to by Crampton, who steered his shot past Brindle.
Garstang fought back, but a succession of three corners could not produce a goal as the Furness defence defended desperately.
A frustrated Squirrell was booked before Fawcett and Poole replaced Mattichechia and Benson in the 61st minute.
Whilst the change did give the home team some impetus it was Furness who profited when How scored a second after a quick break caught the Garstang defence cold.
Gierke replaced Jack on 68 minutes and for the remainder Garstang made every effort to get back in the game.
Anderson, Draycott, Stone and Gierke all had chances, but in the end it was Furness who deservedly took their place in the next round, leaving Garstang to concentrate on the league and achieving that all important promotion.
