Longridge Town 5

Longridge Town travelled to Cheshire league club Daten looking to reach the semi-final of the Lancashire FA Amateur Shield for a second successive season.

Town boss Anthony Keefe and assistant Darren Gornall had a full strength squad to choose from for the highly-anticipated tie and made one change from the previous week with striker Garran St Vall replacing Sam Dean.

Just two minutes after kick-off Longridge had the lead, a corner by Joe Melling caused confusion in the Daten penalty box and Rob Horn pounced on the loose ball and struck home from six yards.

Daten were unlucky not to level the scores when their centre forward hit a powerful shot that had goalkeeper Matt Hind beaten but bounced off the post before being cleared to safety.

With 20 minutes of the half played Longridge extended their lead with a superb goal.

A ball was played out of defence to St Vall who showed great pace and power to get away from his marker and hit a shot into the top corner from 20 yards.

Even with a two-goal lead Daten remained threatening but Town put home the third after St Vall was brought down just outside the box and up stepped Jack English to crash the ball home with his left-foot.

Longridge stepped up a gear in the second half, both St Vall and Coar stretching the Daten defence and on 60 minutes got a fourth when Coar got away from his marker and crossed for St Vall to slide home on the run for his second of the game.

Even with a four goal advantage Longridge continued to press and a fifth came with five minutes left to play when Joe Melling and English combined down the right with the cross put into his own net by the Daten defender.

Speaking after the game assistant manager Darren Gornall said it was a “resounding result” for Longridge.

He added: “We will be looking to go one better this season and reach the final.”
