Garatang Spartans 4

Great Eccleston 2

After losing 2-1 in last week’s first leg of the semi final with Great Eccleston and coming off the back of nine straight league defeats, bottom of the league Garstang were given no chance in the second leg of the champions cup semi final. Garstang had their strongest side this season on paper but it started badly as they conceded a soft goal in the eighth minute. They were hanging on when captain Anthony Woods worked hard to win the ball and played Deane Cross though for one on one with the Eccleston keeper, just as he was about to slot home the ball he was fouled and from the subsequent penalty Dave Jenner forced home the ball and Garstang were level 1-1.

In the 60th minute the lively Alex Green rounded the keeper to make it 2-1. Great Eccleston were unable to handle Green and Deane Cross up front and when Rory Mower played Cross through he made no mistake and smashed the ball home.

Garstang were on the front foot and good work from Tom Derbyshire earned Garstang a corner which Green took and somehow it found its way straight into the back of the net. With Garstang in control and only ten minutes remaining two substitutes were made and the disruption to the side let Eccleston in and they scored to make it 2-4 which meant they only needed one more to win the tie on away goals.

Shaun Thornton and Jo Collinson were in no mood to let anything past them and Garstang were mightily relieved to hear the final whistle and book a place in the final at Lancasters Giant Axe on March 17 7.30pm KO.
