West Lancashire League Premier Division
Garstang FC 3
Burnley Utd 4
A catalogue of defensive errors gifted Burnley all three points on a day that the Riversiders will quickly want to forget.
Osbourne was making his first start of the season at the expense of Melling who dropped to the bench with Sutcliffe and new signing Christian Cantero.
It wasn’t long before the rot began when a sloppy back pass by Benson let in Riley who had the easiest of chances to open his team’s account.
Benson did make amends minutes later when he blocked a McGloughlin strike. Garstang were all at sea when Riley had another chance to put his team further ahead but he missed his opportunity.
Garstang drew level on 24 minutes when Anderson avoided two challenges before unleashing his shot at goal the ball was palmed out to Louth who coolly guided his shot into the top corner.
The goal seemed to lift the home team but the nearest they came to another goal before the break was a shot come cross by Bell that just cleared the bar.
Burnley were back in front on 49 minutes when Wood latched on to a poor clearance by Brindle to make it 1 – 2. Sutcliffe came on for Osbourne on 65 minutes but within three minutes another piece of farcical defending saw Wood make it three for the visitors.
Melling replaced Anderson as Garstang strived desperately to get back in the game.
Their frantic efforts were rewarded when first Fawcett made good contact with a Bell cross at the near post to make it 2 -3.
Then Gierke with the help of a deflection brought the scores level and at that stage it more looked like a Garstang winner was on its way when Poole blasted over then with only six minutes to go Garstang were stunned when Russell popped up with the winner for the visitors to complete a miserable afternoon for Garstang.
