Garstang 5

Ambleside United 0

Garstang brushed aside Ambleside with consummate ease on Tuesday, April 23, moving another step closer to a return to the West Lancs. Premier League, at the first attempt.

Ambleside were under the cosh from the kick off. A good run and pull back by Gierke to Poole saw the striker’s shot smothered away for a corner and not for the first time this season, Squirrell converted the resulting kick by Anderson after only 5 minutes.

It was 20 minutes before the visitors had a worthwhile shot at goal but Trippitt was well off target with his shot.

The lethal combination of an Anderson corner and a Squirrell header made it 2–0 five minutes later and it should have been three straight away when a superb cross field ball by Jack found Poole but he just couldn’t find the important touch.

A quick free kick by Helliwell to Trippett almost caught the Garstang defence cold but the number 7 couldn’t hit the target.

A very lively Matty Poole who had been a constant threat for the visitors’ defence was the provider for Fawcett to smash home the third goal after 37 minutes.

Garstang were totally in command. Heap was booked for hauling down Poole, a Squirrell header skimmed the bar from a Gierke free kick then Draycott shot over.

The game was virtually over in the 46th minute when Anderson’s corner went directly into the Ambleside net. It looked like it was going to be a rout when Squirrell stroked home number five from the penalty spot after being pushed over by Packham after only 51 minutes. Such was Garstang’s dominance that numerous chances were created but none were taken leaving the home team with a comfortable 5-0 victory with four home games to go.

The game was sponsored by the club’s principal shirt sponsor Rockform Ltd who chose hat-trick hero Chris Squirrell as their Man of the Match.
