Former Garstang footballer, the late Adam Swanwick will be further remembered by his team mates and others who knew him, throughout the season.

All members of the second team will wear shirts with his nickname “Jags” emblazoned on the back.

A pre-season friendly, between Garstang and Padiham has also been played in Adam’s memory, for the “Jags” Memorial Trophy, and it is hoped to make this an annual, pre-season event.

Adam’s mother Winnie Swanwick was invited to present the trophy, which went to Padiham, at the end of a match in which Garstang lost 5-0.

Of the match, commercial manager Les Taylor said it “probably created more questions than answers for Garstang’s management duo of Swan and Gierke”.

He said: “Although the opposition was from three leagues above and Garstang were without Baker, Crossley, Glennie, Fawcett, Osbourne, Draycott and new signing Gardner, it was felt the manager expected more from the players on view, judging by his demeanour after the game.”

Garstang started brightly enough with some good possession but found themselves a goal behind on 13 minutes after some poor defending allowed Gray to prod home Padiham’s opening goal.

An injury to Benson forced him to withdraw, further weakening the Garstang defence and within two minutes Gray again had made it 0-2.

The home team did regain their composure and with a little luck could have scored themselves, had both Poole and Gierke taken their chances. It wasn’t until the 55th minute before Padiham emphasised their senior status when the unmarked Allen headed home direct from a corner to make it 0–3.

A lively looking Swindlehurst along with Taylor and Panepinto came on for Halliwell, Riley and Poole, but it didn’t prevent Padiham adding to their score in the 72nd and 75th minutes.
