West Lancashire League Premier Division
Garstang FC 2
Charnock Richard 4
Garstang FC suffered a three-goal blitz in the opening 20 minutes against league toppers Charnock Richard on Saturday and even a two goal fightback was not enough to secure them a point at home.
The Riversiders staged their own version of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” with a determined comeback, but some disastrous defending , one red card, six yellows and a penalty decision that was reversed on advice of the linesman, who deemed the offending tackle to be outside the box, proved to be their undoing
In-form Charnock started the game like an express train, Andy Roberts giving them the lead on 14 minutes. Fawcett did well to prevent Nolan from making it two a minute later, but then Crossley clumsily brought down Bain in the box leaving Mike Fletcher to convert the 17th minute penalty. The game looked all but over when two minutes later Mark Woods had made it three.
Too their great credit, Garstang staged a magnificent fightback. Chances fell to Dodd and Baker before Aaron Halliwell’s tap-in landed Garstang’s opener.
It was game on when Melling brought a great save out of visitors keeper Bates just before half-time.
A controversial decision from referee Mr Leonard to award a penalty before changing his mind was followed up with the booking of six Garstang players and a sending-off, with Charnock picking up four yellow cards.
Ryan Dodd had pulled a second goal back for Garstang in the 65th minute before his sending off for disputing the decision. Garstang looked sure to equalise, but the goal did not come, with Daniel Hogg sealing it for the visitors by heading home a Regan cross.
Garstang sit eleventh in the table on 20 points with two fixtures remaining ahead of the new year.
