Tom Graham was on target for Garstang, but his goal proved to be a consolation in a ding-dong clash between two very committed sides.

Garstang tested the ’keeper in the first minute when an Andy Ireland free-kick made Almond in the Coppull goal make a hurried save, but it was the only time the opposition keeper looked dodgy in the whole game.

Two minutes later Garstang stopper Curwen had to be on his mettle to keep out a close range shot, but on nine minutes the speedy winger McFayden crossed and although Curwen kept out the first attempt Vaisney managed to poke home the rebound to put the home side one up.

Garstang pressed forward and Darbyshire had to react to turn away a Taylor Snr cross before Matichecchia had to make a last ditch tackle to deny Mason at the other end.

On 20 minutes Stuart broke clear, but blazed wide from a narrow angle when a pull back might have been the better option. Ten minutes later the same player screwed a shot just wide.

Wallbank had to come off for the hosts, to be replaced by Winstanley, and although Garstang did all the pressing Coppull had the best chances, with McFayden firing over and Curwen getting off his line to deny Mason. Just before half time Taylor Snr came off with a calf injury to be replaced by Miller.

The second half was all Garstang, with Curwen being virtually redundant.

Stuart was just wide with a header from a Swindlehurst cross and a few minutes later his shot was tipped onto the post by Almond. However, on 55 minutes the game was virtually settled when McFayden strolled through a Garstang defence that parted like the Red Sea to plant a shot in the far corner.

Garstang gave themselves hope on 62 minutes when they broke from their own 18-yard box.

Fawcett drove forward before passing to Graham who exchanged passes with Swindlehurst before impressively planting the ball past the advancing ’keeper.

Coppull defended in numbers for the last half hour and despite a great 25-yard shot from Matichecchia and Fawcett having two efforts blocked it was not to be.

No complaints about the effort from the lads, they just did not get the breaks.
