Peel proved lightning can strike in the same place twice at the weekend to blow open the Women’s League title race.

In the Flood-lit Cup semis just over a fortnight ago, the westerners beat Corinthians 2-1. On Sunday Peel again defeated Corinthians by the same scoreline in the Warehouse Fitness Women’s League.

All the goals were scored in the first half with Peel taking the lead twice through a Sarah Wignall brace.

The Whites netted via a Jade Burden strike.

Corinthians were presented with a glorious opportunity to level matters when they were awarded a penalty, but Peel goalkeeper Lisa Pugh saved the resulting spot-kick.

In the other match, Douglas Royal defeated 10-player Colby. Leading 8-0 at half-time, Donna Shimmin (3) Zoe Hawley (2), Sarah Breen (2), Stephanie Hoogveld (2), Rebecca Cole, Becci Pate, Angela Waite and Andrea Lace netted for the Ballafletcher side in thr 13-0 win.

A full round-up of all the women’s football will appear in this week’s Manx Independent.
