Garstang claimed all three points but a series of missed chances meant this was a much closer game than it should have been.

The first good opportunity fell to the usually reliable Bevan but he blazed over from eight yards. Three minutes later Garstang took the lead when Carter got to the by line, pulled the ball back to Assalone, who set up Roberts for a tap in at the far post. It was a break down the left wing which led to the second goal. Briault won the ball before passing to Roberts who in turn played a great ball through for Assalone to out pace the last defender and score.

Garstang went three up on 35 mins when Hofstetter went on a marauding run down the right wing before cutting in and setting up Assalone for his second. At this point Penworthan looked a beaten side but a headed goal by the hosts gave them hope going into the second half.

The second period was only seven minutes old when Penwortham made it 3-2 from a free kick just outside the box, but Garstang restored their two goal cushion three minutes later when Carter headed down a Mullin free kick for Bevan to finish from close range. With five minutes left Penwortham scrambled in a corner and the nerves were starting to fray on the touchline which wasn’t helped with the ref playing seven minutes of added time but finally the whistle went to end the game 4-3 to Garstang.
