GARSTANG’S match against Oldham last Saturday was abandoned in a near farcical manner as the referee went down injured less than fifteen minutes into the game.
The referee on the adjacent pitch, featuring the Garstang Blues vs Aldwinians, was ushered over and asked if he could take over the game. He agreed to the request, as did Oldham and Garstang.
However, the injured referee deemed that the stand in was not qualified to officiate at that level and informed him that he could not take over the game. That meant that the game had to be abandoned, with the scores tied at 0-0, much to the displeasure of the players and decent crowd who had come to support the game.
As far as the match went it was hard to say how it would have gone when barely quarter of an hour had been played. However, during that period Garstang had been extremely competitive in all aspects of the game and they had the best chance of the day when it looked as if Joe Taylor had scored in the corner. However, the referee disallowed the try. Other than that there was not much else to report other than the bizarre ending.
No date has yet been set for when the game will be replayed but it will presumably be the next free weekend which is currently November 26.
