Poulton Yth 1 v 1 Garstang Yth

With the late withdrawals of Assalone and Hands due to illness for the first time this season the squad was a little light on numbers with most of the defence missing. Bevan and Hofstetter were drafted in as emergency centre halves with Moss and Briault filling in at full backs.

It was a bright morning but there was a biting wind which Garstang had at there backs in the first half. The visitors started brightly and pushed Poulton back for the first 25 minutes although the firm pitch meant that controlling the ball was difficult and there was no real flow to the play and neither keeper was tested. Garstang’s best chances came from corners which resulted on two occasions with mad scrambles in the six yard box but they were unable to force the ball over the line.

At the other end Poulton gradually began to work their way out of their half and a dangerous cross failed to find an attacker before Graham in the Garstang goal had to get down sharply to his left to palm a powerful shot away.

The second half was only 5 minutes old when Carter was robbed half way into his own half and the Poulton striker strode forward before hitting a fine strike into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Garstang were now up against it but for all their endeavours chances were hard to come by and it was Poulton, with the wind in their favour, who came close from a free kick inches wide of the post. With 12 minutes to go the hosts almost wrapped up the game when the centre forward got free on the by line, pulled the ball back to a team mate on the six yards box, his shot was palmed out by Graham but the follow up looked certain to end in the back of the net until Handley, who had an excellent game, somehow blocked the ball on the line and Graham gratefully pounced on the ball.

Garstang had tried Applegate, Handley, Roberts and the hard working Smith up front but it was the Roberts/Applegate combination which finally brought the equaliser with 10 minutes to go. Mullin took a quick throw on the left, Roberts challenged for the ball which broke to Applegate and he cut into the box before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top of the net.

Poulton almost snatched it at the death with a shot scooped over from 4 yards and the last kick of the game was a free kick which Graham kept out and Bevan scrambled away.

One of those days when nothing really came off for Garstang but a hard earned point nonetheless.
