FOR the second week in succession, Garstang conceded a goal in injury time, denying the Riversiders their first victory of the season.

Former Freckleton centre-back Adam Leigh was making his Garstang debut.

The game almost exploded as soon as the third minute, when a fearsome tackle by Massam on Squirrell earned the Hesketh left-back a booking.

Both sides created half-chances as the game swung from end to end, but the first real opportunity fell to David Jack in the 22nd minute. A great pass from West found the Garstang striker just inside the box, his sweet strike being tipped on to the bar.

Within a minute, Garstang were in front, through an arrow-like strike by Bryson.

Garstang’s confidence grew with new signing Leigh dominant at the back, and Jack working tirelessly up front.

The striker’s work was rewarded before the break when, after a good run and cross from the right, Poole was on hand to smash the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2–0.

Hesketh pulled a goal back straight from the kick-off.

The goal rocked the home side, and it wasn’t until Hesketh had Thompson sent off in the 57th minute for a dangerous tackle on Poole, that the Garstang team seemed to regain some confidence.

A superb crossfield ball by Bryson found the head of Jack, who laid the ball off for Poole, whose shot was saved.

The Garstang striker was obviously not moving comfortably following the previous bad challenge, and had to be replaced.

The home team were unlucky not to go further in front, when West’s goalbound effort was deflected for a corner following a good move involving Bardsley, Preston and Jack.

The pressure began to build on Garstang as Hesketh surged forward for an equaliser and, sure enough, the inevitable happened.

Deep into injury time, Harris was given the time to tee-up the ball for himself and lob Howell for what was an incredible goal, much to the dismay of the watching home crowd.
