THE table tennis season started with the Garstang junior players in action at the Lancashire trials, staged in Preston.
Four Garstang players entered – Tom Hynes, Ben Hynes, Kelly Southward and Stuart Southward.
All the players did well, with Kelly earning the highest place in the cadet girls, finishing fourth in the county.
Hopefully, Kelly will be selected to play for Lancashire in December.
Tom Hynes finished ninth in the junior boys, and should get a place in the Lancashire B team.
Last weekend, eight Garstang players made the trip to Blackpool for the first of a series of 1 and 2 star tournaments.
The players in action were Kelly and Stuart Southward, Ross Carter, Luke McGrath, Thomas Naylor, Owen Bendall, Tommy Kennedy and Ben Hynes.
All the players did well, most reaching the semi-final stages, with Kelly again finishing highest, coming runner-up in the cadet girls event.
The Lancaster League starts this week with the Kennon Trophy and the Kennon Plate.
Three of the four Garstang teams are in action.
Garstang A meet Ripley Barbarians in the Kennon Trophy, while in the Kennon Plate, Garstang D meet St Luke’s D, and Garstang B meet MCHS Braves.
In the Preston League, newly-promoted Garstang B got their Premier Division campaign off to a great start with a 6-4 win over Kirkham.
Martin Ireland claimed three wins, Ashley Bradburn chipped in with two more, and a victory in the doubles secured the victory.
Garstang A scored a fantastic win over last year’s champions St Austin’s.
Martin Wyatt had a fantastic debut for the club with three wins, while Graham Coupe added two more, and again the doubles secured the victory.
