Preston Academicals 3

Chipping 4

The Greens wore black armbands and both sides observed a minute’s silence before kick off as a mark of respect to the late Alan ‘Jossy’ Walmsley.

Chipping took the lead early on and had doubled it before the 20-minute mark when Callum James squeezed home from the tightest of angles at the near post. His first in a Chipping shirt.

The Greens conceded just before the half ended but the side remained positive right up until the whistle.

At half time, in the absence of manager Ireland, stand-in Ross stressed his desire to push on and not sit back on what had already been achieved in the first half.

Academicals managed to catch Chipping pressing too high up the fields and countered to equal the score line.

Cookson was brought on for Helm at left back as the Greens continued to create chances and were denied two penalties – one a blatant tug to the ground and the other a clear swipe at the ankles of Hobro as he advanced at pace into the box.

The referee finally awarded Chipping a spot kick for another foul inside the 18-yard box, the captain Holt dispatched with ease sending the keeper the wrong way to put Chipping back into the lead.

Harrison made way for Slater in a like for like change up top. Right winger Airey hit a sweet volley from the edge of the box which dipped over the keeper into the top corner.

Preston Academicals hit back to make the score line 3-4 with minutes left to play.

Platt joined the fray for a nervy ending to the game with players having to make last-ditch tackles and put their bodies on the line to ensure they got the three points they deserved.

After one such tackle Cookson twisted his knee badly and had to be helped from the field, leaving Chipping to play out the last five minutes with 10 men.

The lads left on the pitch they dug in and held on to secure a great win over a team placed five places higher in the league table.

MOM - Bartek Rosinski.
