Garstang junior teams are on top of the table

Player of the month: Stuart Southward

Player of the month: Stuart Southward

Both Garstang teams finished the day at the top of their respective divisions when Garstang Community Academy hosted National Junior League table tennis in its sports hall, on Saturday.

The Garstang A team of Luke McGrath, Amy Wells, Ben Hynes and Stuart Southward are top of Division 1.

Meanwhile, the B team of Owen Bendall, Tommy Kennedy, Joseph Peat and Daniel Williams are top of Division 2, and both will be looking to fight off the competition when the final day’s play takes place in February.

On Sunday Megan Dillon and sister Alice were in action at the Blackpool 1 Star Tournament, Megan taking the Cadet title, and Alice taking the Under 11s title.

The sisters met in the semi-final of the Under 13s event, with younger sister Alice coming out on top 3-2, narrowly missing out in the final to Holly Williams.

In the Lancaster & Morecambe League Premier Division Garstang A claimed an impressive 22-16 win over Lancaster University A team, Stuart Southward winning all three, Luke McGrath and Kelly Southward adding one win each,

Kelly and Stuart teamed up to take the doubles.

The B team claimed only their second win of the year coming out on top 22-20 over University B, Dave Holroyd winning two, Mike Gregory and Jim Vasey adding one win each, again the Garstang team were victorious in the doubles. The win gives the team a chance of survival, however they still sit next to bottom of the table.

In Division 1, Garstang D still sit in second place but are determined to catch up on rivals Ripley Barbarians. Currently they sit 27 points behind the league leaders with seven matches to play.

Behind them, the C team are rapidly climbing the table. This week they enjoyed a 28-7 win over University D, Joe Peat and Thomas Gorst winning all three, only Kevin Aughton fell to defeat losing one of his three matches.

In the Preston League Premier Division, Garstang A claimed a 7-3 win over BAE B, Graham Coupe winning all three, Martin Wyatt won two and Ashley Bradburn one, Graham and Martin winning the doubles.

Meanwhile, in Division 1 the B team fell to a 7-3 defeat to top team Ashton. Unfortunately promotion is now looking highly unlikely as the team are now 20 points off the top.

Stuart Southward was named as Player Of The Month for January, thanks to his impressive performances in various leagues and competitions, and his commitment to training.

This weekend sees more action with a Two Star Tournament being held at Garstang Community Academy Sports Hall on Saturday and National Cadet League on Sunday.
