Keegan: ‘I wasn’t good enough for local boys’ team’
Star quality: Kevin Keegan with students and staff at Stonyhurst College
Delighted students at Stonyhurst College welcomed former England manager Kevin Keegan, who gave them top tips on getting ahead in life.
Keegan visited the college through the organisation Christians in Sport.
He talked to a large audience in the college chapel about his faith and his time at Liverpool, Hamburg, Newcastle and with England.
Talking about his first steps into professional football, he told the audience how he had been told he was not good enough to join his local boys’ team.
This made him determined to work harder and get better so that he could go on in football to achieve his dream.
“Nobody will give you something for nothing,” he said, “You have to work harder than everybody else to make sure you get what you want.”
Ultimately, he achieved more than many players who were considered much better than him because he had not given up.
The overall message – always try to do your very utmost in every situation you find yourself in – ‘Quant Je Puis’ (all that I can).
As the former footballer left, there was a chance encounter with another former England manager – Brian Ashton, who once taught at Stonyhurst.
Kevin was happy to pose for pictures and signed many autographs on pieces of paper, football shirts, school ties and even a pupil’s arm.
A college spokesman said: “We are grateful to Kevin for being so generous with his time.”
