Garstang 2

Mossley Hill 0

After two weeks of ice and snow Garstang 1 finally managed to play a game of hockey on Sunday, and hosted Merseyside’s Mossley Hill (MH) at Preston Sports Arena.

Garstang’s previous encounter with the Division 2 NW league side was a frustrating affair when a 3-1 lead suddenly turned into a 3-4 deficit. Garstang refused to repeat their mistakes.

Garstang made a determined start and put early pressure on MH’s area. The sustained press on MH’s defence and good forward play created a set piece. Lyndsey Cookson neatly slotted in with her trademark ‘in off the left post’ in the subsequent penalty corner.

After all the good forward play, Garstang let MH back into the game for the last 15 minutes of the first half by carelessly losing possession and not clearing the lines quick enough.

MH created chances of their own with some penalty corner opportunities and a good open play chance was scuppered off the line by a briefly returning Sarah Muir.

Garstang picked up the pace again in the second half and put some good moves together.

In particular, captain Lindsay Norton breaking through from defence, releasing Fran Summers on a run.

Midge Bury also made some good runs and was interlinking well with Summers and Diane Roe.

Garstang were creating a series of chances, and for a time history was repeating itself.

But the attacking diligence finally paid dividends when the ball bounced around MH’s ‘D’, eventually falling to Midge Bury on the left who found room to strike into the corner. 2-0 and a valuable three points secured.
