Garstang Res 2
Burscough Richmond Res 1
Garstang progressed to the last eight of the Houston Cup in a pulsating cup tie down at The Riverside.
The home side dominated much of the opening exchanges and a Swindlehurst corner was headed against his own bar by a Burscough defender as early as the third minute, the first of five occasions Garstang were to hit the frame of the goal and stay out.
Miller shot just wide from an Ireland corner on 19 minutes but on 23 minutes Garstang took a deserved lead when Stewart won the ball, played it to Graham and his cross was tapped in at the far post by Panepinto.
A minute later it was 2-0 when Swindlehurst played the ball over the top of the Burscough defence and Graham nipped in to lob the advancing Shacklady in the visitors goal.
Hitchin picked up a yellow for Burscough on 33 minutes and was lucky to last the full game for some of his off-the-ball antics.
The hosts continued to press and just before half time the game should have been over when Stewart broke clear and his cross shot was palmed out to Panepinto who somehow missed the open goal.
The visitors gambled at half time using both their substitutes but Graham should have increased the lead four minutes into the half with a carbon copy of his first goal but this time the ball came back off the post.
Two minutes later, man of the match for his second half performance, Dan Curwen in the Garstang goal, made a brilliant double save but after Stewart hit the bar a rare mistake in the Garstang defence led to Berry having a simple tap in to make it 2-1.
Then Swindlehurst’s cross shot hit the post and Ireland’s free kick came back off the post to Panepinto who blazed over from six yards.
Stuart and Martin both picked up yellows for handbags on 75 minutes, but by now Garstang had re-asserted themselves and although Curwen had to be alert on a couple of occasions they saw the game out comfortably.
Cliffe was probably happy to just see yellow for a nasty challenge on Sutcliff and Miller picked up a caution in the last minute.
Dan Curwen was deservedly man of the match but Johnny Baldwin has been class the last couple of games and again this was a team effort.
