Nearly 400 young competitors took to the water for Garstang Amateur Swimming Club’s first gala.

The ‘Garstang Medals Gala’ welcomed swimmers from clubs across the region for the multi-event competition.

Garstang Gators fielded 38 of their own members, picking up a haul of 62 medals and recording a total of 90 personal best times across ten events.

The top PB achievements went to Caitlin McNeil for knocking 14.03s off her 100IM time and Matthew Fricker for 12.18s off his 100IM.

Helen Charlesworth from Garstang ASC said: “We would like to extend thanks to all those involved in helping to make this gala a success, from the behind the scenes helpers ensuring things ran smoothly to those who officiated as well as all the swimmers that entered and the staff at the Palatine leisure centre.”

The sprint meet was held at the Palatine Leisure Centre in Blackpool and saw talented youngsters compete in 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Butterfly and the 100m Individual Medley.

Medals or ribbons were presented to the top six swimmers in each age group with speeding tickets presented to any swimmer who exceeded the time cap for the event.

President of Cumbria ASA Raymond Watson and Peter Ryder and Allan Townsend of the Garstang and District Lions made the presentations.

The Club also presented the Alan Postlethwaite Memorial Trophies to the best boy and girl at the gala, awarded to Hadley Price of Garstang ASC and Annabelle McBratney of Barrow ASC.
