Garstang Community Academy’s young netballers have been undefeated champions of the Wyre & Fylde School Netball Tournament.

Coach Katie Rainbow led the Year 10 team to victory after a thrilling final against Kirkham Grammar.

Garstang’s Year 11 girls also made the final of the annual competition, narrowly missing out to the AKS squad.

The Year 10 squad of Alicia Clegg, Ruth Marsden, Jesica Wilshaw, Lauren Hull, Jerdine Farrell, Sarah Marsden, Hannah Lawrenson, Niamh Kerr and Gemma Leach flew through the opening rounds with 10-1 wins over Lytham and Millfield and a 13-2 finish against AKS B.

Expert shooting from Alicia Clegg and Ruth Marsden saw the side pull away from the opposition with a solid defence helping maintain possession.

The girls met with Kirkham Grammar in the final Kirkham Grammar and started well with two early goals.

Kirkham were on the back foot and confident Jessica Willshaw, Lauren Hull and Jerdine Farrell put in some quality passes across the centre and fine finishing to take the lead to 5-0.

Kirkham fought back to take possession but Garstang held strong for a well-deserved 9-5 win.

Shooter Ruth said: “This was a great achievement, and we were really pleased with the way we performed and worked together, it was a wonderful, competitive afternoon of netball!

“Well done to all who played and thanks to the teachers who coached us to victory.”

Miss Rainbow said: “The girls have worked hard on their skills and teamwork, they are a great group of girls to work with and coach.

“There is more hard work ahead this season, but what a start. I would like to thank our tournament cheerleaders for the day, Mrs Wilshaw and Mr and Mrs Marsden.”

The Year 11s also had a
cutting edge through the early rounds with an unbeaten run against Baines, Fleetwood, AKS B, Saint Aidans, Cardinal Allen and Carr Hill.

In the final Garstang met tournament title holders AKS.

It was a brave team effort on behalf of Lauren Duffy, Alicia Price, Katie Russell, Alice Myers, Corrine Saul, Mollie Quinn, Sarah Taylor, Lauren Hart and Ellie Costain but the strong AKS found the edge to win the competition.

Miss Rainbow added: “The netball squad have had a wonderful five years playing netball, they have represented the school and worked hard on their skills and team work. They have been a pleasure to coach and I wish them well for the rest of the season.”
