A closely fought contest rounded off a superb day at the Tom Barron Open Singles Bowling Competition.
The annual competition at Woodplumpton and District Community Club, sponsored by Keith Leeming of Tom Barron, saw top class entries from the North West, Yorkshire, and further afield.
In the top half of the draw semi-finalist Hugh Hornby bowled superbly, beating Wayne Ditchfield, Martin Gilpin and Barry Simm. Simon Coupe progressed at the expense of last year’s winner James Grimston, Clay Flattley and newcomer Kieren Dodd.
In the bottom half of the draw Andy Cairns reached the semi-finals by beating Owen Jackson, previous winner Darren Edmondson, and Jon Metters, while Daniel Sillitoe saw off David Gwilliam, Michael Leach, and Mark Holden.
The first semi-final between Hugh Hornby and Simon Coupe saw Hugh lead 13-11, before Simon broke away to win 21-16.
In the other tie Daniel led at 11-9, before Andy built a 17-11 lead and eventually won 21-14.
The final between Simon and Andy was nip and tuck all the way to 12 across before Simon broke away 18-12 and then 20-15.
Andy made a determined effort and recovered to 20-20 before Simon managed to scrape home 21-20.
Organisers thanked the Woodplumpton Ladies, who worked extremely hard all day providing an excellent range of homemade refreshments for players and spectators alike.
Entries are already coming in for next year’s competition, on Saturday, May 10, 2014.
