Garstang travelled to Merseyside over the weekend for last fixture of 2013. With a previous win against the students Garstang were looking to ‘do the double’ and see a very torrid 2013 out with three points.

The game started with those ambitions at the forefront of some solid attacking from Garstang.

Nicky Charter was on her usual good form of great harrying of the defence and using her pace to her advantage.

Fran Summers was in support using her stick skills well. Open play chances came and went. Three set pieces came and went with the scoreline still sitting very solidly at 0-0.

LU broke from defending a penalty corner to earn one of their own, and then promptly converted with a strike.

Garstang soaked up some pressure and then the game became very open with play swinging from end to end.

LU started the second half well with the better passing and hitting the post twice. Garstang in contrast were losing possession in dangerous areas, lacked the ability to complete more than three consecutive passes and consistently committed unforced errors.

In the last 15 minutes, Garstang started to created their own pressure.

Diane Roe was charging down the right, with centre midfield combo of Lyndsey Hayes and Josie Rice in support. With a very under confident LU umpire Garstang’s luck was against them, although Diane Roe came close shooting just over after good play.

The reds were chasing a draw, but after loose play in defence LU earned themselves a penalty corner and converted with a minute to go.
