North Hockey Women’s league Division Two North West
Garstang Ladies played Northern Ladies (Crosby) in Liverpool on Saturday following their 2–1 win against the same team the previous Sunday.
From the off, Garstang were under some pressure from a determined Northern. However, Garstang’s Josie Rice fought back with some good runs up the wing but the side’s crosses failed to make the D and some stick tackles by defenders went unpunished.
Garstang began to find their game but their passing skills were poor with too many delays enabling determined Northern players to step in front and intercept.
After 12 minutes Northern nearly scored and Jude Chapman made a good clearance off the line. Fran Summers replied with a good run on but was left frustrated when a Northern stick blocked her shot.
An injury to Lily Helme only added to Garstang’s frustrations.
Northern broke the deadlock on 27 minutes with a scrambled goal from the right with a shot that went across SJ. It was nearly two minutes later when the team secured a penalty corner (PC) but SJ made an excellent step save.
Northern continued to hold the balance of play into the second half and Garstang were unable to clear the ball from free hits as Northern continually pressed close despite warnings from the umpire.
Di Roe forced a penalty corner after making a great break up the right wing but Northern struck back and at a second PC scored a well worked deflected goal that caught a dispirited Garstang napping.
After 20 minutes Nicky Oddie made a good save in front of the line at another Northern PC.
Garstang fired up and went in to attack mode flinging everything at Northern for the dying stages of the game but Northern held firm for a deserved 2 -0 win.
