Nine swimmers from Garstang Amateur Swimming club, which also draws members from the Longridge area, came away with a haul of medals from the Lancashire County Championships.

The 50m pool was new territory to some of the Garstang Gators squad, who had previously only competed in 25m pools.

Representing the girls were Natalie Charlesworth, Rebecca Hawtin, Kiera Richmond, Abbie Hewitt and Ellie Moss.

Natalie, competing in the youngest nine years age group, swam a personal best (PB), in the 50m freestyle.

Kiera and Rebecca swam in the 10 years age group. Kiera achieved a remarkable 26-second PB in the 200m breaststroke, putting her just outside the top 100 in the British rankings for her age group. She also swam a PB in the 50m breaststroke.

Rebecca also gained a PB for the 50m backstroke.

Abbie Hewitt, in the 12 years 50m freestyle, and Ellie Moss, in the 13 years 50m breaststroke, both recorded personal bests.

Representing the boys were Sam Dugdale, Hadley Price, Albert Hadcock and Ed Dunkley.

Sam, in the 13 year age group, swam three PBs in the 50m backstroke, butterfly and freestyle, winning a silver medal in the freestyle, and reaching 63rd in the British rankings for his age group.

Hadley managed a 100m freestyle PB in the 15 years age group.

Albert followed Sam to the podium with a bronze medal in the 16 years age group 50m freestyle. He also gained a PB in this event and the 100m freestyle.

Ed achieved a PB in the 50m freestyle.

Steve Eccles, team manager, said: “At this level, just qualifying is worthy of praise and our team earned theirs. The squad gained not only two podium finishes, but a personal best times recorded.

“The rewards that can be gained with continued dedication and effort in training, which these swimmers put in, shows in results like these.

“Garstang Amateur Swimming Club (Garstang Gators) are always looking for swimmers to join the club.

“We welcome children from pre-school age upwards to learn to swim, train, keep fit, and compete.

“There is coaching, for beginners to experienced swimmers.”
