Garstang Blues welcomed league leaders Aspull 1st XV to Hudson Park on Saturday but were unable to avenge last year’s chastening defeat by the top of the league team.
However, this fixture was totally different to the first meeting as a battling Garstang side competed all the way. Both sides exchanged penalties early on and Garstang took the lead when Duncan Lambert kicked his second penalty of the afternoon (6-3). Aspull then took the lead with the first try of the afternoon but the Blues reduced the deficit with another Lambert penalty (9-10). Aspull struck back with their second try but the Blues refused to lie down and Lambert again reduced the arrears just before the break to leave the score at 15-12 to Aspull going into the interval. At half time Garstang lost the influential figure of Graeme Slater and were unable to impose themselves on the game as much in the second period. They battled on bravely but they were unable to prevent Aspull from pulling away and sealing the game with three additional tries. The final score was 33-12.
