Garstang tennis junior Jack Culver retained his cup title as young players from around the area competed in the Lady Atkins Cup.

Garstang Tennis Club hosted the Lady Atkins Cup for the second time.

The Under 14 Junior round-robin tournament was open to junior members of both St Michael’s and Barton as well as the host club.

The competition attracted eight juniors altogether, with Barton making up five of the entries, St Michael’s one, with Garstang being represented by last year’s winner Jack Culver and Tom Hawkins.

Both Jack and Tom, who were both drawn in Group B, reached the semi-finals following the group matches along with Owen Haslam and Tom Ikin (who came through after a tie-break with James Eckersley from St Michael’s), emerging from Group A.

Owen and Tom highlighted the promise shown by Barton’s juniors, who all seem to possess consistent groundstrokes, not only on the evidence of this tournament, but throughout the recent Ribble League summer season in which they finished second in the Under14 division.

Though they did not make it past the round robin matches Jennifer Shepherd, Rebecca Ikin and James Bunning more than held their own, and were a credit to their club.

In the semi-finals Tom Hawkins defeated Owen Haslem, and Jack Culver defeated Tom Ikin, setting up another all Garstang final.

Jack then went on to beat Tom winning by four games to two and retain the Lady Atkins Cup.
